Teus Nobel – Saudade
Teus Nobel’s album Saudade is a profound musical exploration of light and darkness, deeply rooted in the emotional concept of “saudade” from Portuguese culture. Released during a period of personal loss and new beginnings for Nobel, the album reflects both melancholy and joy, as he navigates the passing of his father and the birth of his child.
Saudade is also a tribute to Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, with Nobel reinterpreting lesser-known compositions alongside a talented group of guest musicians, including the string section of the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest under Alexandra Arrieche. The album features a blend of jazz, Brazilian rhythms, and symphonic elements, with standout performances by guitarist Daniel de Moraes, percussionist Martin Verdonk, and pianist Jef Neve, among others.
Opening with the evocative Falando de Amor, the album sets a tone of beautiful melancholy, carried forward by Nobel’s delicate flugelhorn. Tracks like Modinha bring a lighter touch while still embodying the essence of saudade. The synergy between the musicians creates an immersive listening experience that evokes both the sorrow of loss and the hope of new life.
With its emotional depth and intricate arrangements, Saudade stands as a remarkable homage to Jobim and Nobel’s personal journey, making it an essential addition to any jazz or Latin music collection.
