Tanto AmorTeus Nobel

Trumpeter Teus Nobel continues to cement his place as one of the rising stars of Dutch jazz with his album Tanto Amor. Building on the success of his previous release Saudade, which earned him the Edison Jazz Award in 2020, Tanto Amor delves deeper into the rich, melodic world of Brazilian music. All the tracks on this album are compositions by the legendary Brazilian singer and songwriter Ivan Lins, whose music Nobel has translated into lush, orchestral jazz arrangements. Co-produced by Roeland Jacobs, the album offers a soothing yet sophisticated sound, perfect for fans of smooth jazz and bossa nova.

With Tanto Amor, Nobel has created a deeply atmospheric work, filled with subtle nuances that evoke a sense of longing and love. The album was conceived as musical solace during the difficult times of the COVID-19 pandemic, providing listeners with an escape from isolation and loss. Recorded between 2020 and 2021 at WedgeView Studios, a studio founded by Ivan Lins himself, the album features a remarkable lineup of musicians, including flautists Thijs van Leer and Marcelo Martins, guitarist Leonardo Amuedo, bassist Jeroen Vierdag, and drummer Marcel Serierse. Vocalist Anna Serierse, known for her soft and ethereal voice, contributes wordless vocals that add an extra layer of emotion to the arrangements.

Leonardo Amuedo, a frequent collaborator of Ivan Lins, offers standout performances on tracks like “Lembra de Mim” and “Bilhete.” His shimmering guitar work perfectly complements Nobel’s smooth trumpet and flugelhorn playing, creating a sense of intimacy and warmth. The Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Metropole Orkest also make appearances, lending a cinematic quality to the album with their string arrangements.

Tracks like “Arrependimento” and “Meu Espelho” showcase Nobel’s mastery of the trumpet, while songs such as “Voa” and “E A Gente Assim Tão Só” present a dreamy, almost meditative vibe. The album closes with the poignant “Song for Tim,” the only composition not by Ivan Lins, co-written by Nobel and Roberto de Lujo (Rob van Weelde), paying tribute to a dear friend.

Tanto Amor offers listeners a beautifully crafted journey through love, longing, and introspection, all wrapped in the soothing rhythms of Brazilian jazz. Nobel’s melodic playing and the tender arrangements make this album a comforting and profound musical experience, ideal for moments of reflection.
